The most you will pay for a short flight from a well-known operator is around USD 215. Everything else sits between those two numbers.

Base Fare vs Levies: Why There Are Always Two Numbers

Operators quote a base fare for the flight itself, then add a compulsory levy on top. That levy is not a sneaky upsell. It is a government or aviation charge the operator has to collect and pass on, and it is usually a fixed amount per passenger. • Batoka Sky (Zambia): USD 205 base plus a USD 6 aviation fee, so USD 211 all in for about 15 minutes.
• United Air Charter (Zambia): USD 209 for 12 to 15 minutes, with a USD 6 aviation fee already included, plus a temporary USD 15 fuel surcharge charged per booking rather than per person.

Notice that United Air Charter’s fuel surcharge is per booking. If you are a couple, that USD 15 splits between you, so it is USD 7.50 each. If you are flying solo it lands on you alone. Party size quietly changes your per-person cost, which is the kind of detail a headline price never tells you.

The Levies, Explained

There are a few different charges hiding under the word levy. A government levy, like Bonisair’s USD 12, goes to the state. An aviation fee, like the USD 6 charged on the Zambia side, covers airport and aviation costs. The extra money buys more than extra minutes over the falls. The longer routes typically add a stretch of the Batoka Gorge and a pass over the Zambezi National Park, where you have a genuine chance of spotting elephant or hippo from the air. Whether that is worth almost double the price depends entirely on how much the wildlife segment appeals to you.

How to Compare Like for Like

Before you decide anything is cheap or expensive, line the options up on the same terms:

• Use the all-in price, base fare plus every fixed levy, not the headline.
• Check whether a hotel transfer is included, because that can be worth USD 20 to USD 30 you would otherwise pay a taxi.
