Seasonal Guide

Best Time for a Helicopter Flight Over Victoria Falls

There is no bad time to fly. But the experience changes dramatically with the seasons. Here is what to expect each month.

The short answer: June and July offer the best all-round conditions. Good water levels, clear visibility, mild weather. But every season has its appeal. High water (Feb–May) is the most dramatic. Low water (Oct–Dec) reveals the gorge. Pick based on what you want to see.

Victoria Falls during High Water Season

High Water Season

February to May

This is when Victoria Falls is at its most dramatic. The Zambezi is in full flood and the volume of water pouring over the lip is staggering. The spray cloud can rise over 300 metres and is visible from 50 kilometres away.

Advantages

  • + Most dramatic waterfall views
  • + Massive spray cloud creates incredible photos
  • + Full-width falls with every cascade flowing
  • + Rainbows are common in the morning mist

Considerations

  • Heavy mist can obscure ground-level detail directly below
  • You may get wet even in the helicopter
  • The spray cloud dominates the view at times
  • Photography through mist can be challenging

Local tip: The mist can soak you within seconds in March. Wear a waterproof layer even in the helicopter. Morning flights are slightly less misty than afternoon.

Peak Tourist Season

June to September

Peak season for visitors. The weather is dry and mild, perfect for outdoor activities. Water levels begin to drop from June onwards, and by September the eastern cascades may be running low. June and July offer the best balance of water and visibility.

Advantages

  • + Best overall weather for flying
  • + Good water levels in June and July
  • + Clear skies and minimal turbulence
  • + Most flight slots available

Considerations

  • Busiest period with highest demand
  • Book well in advance
  • Water levels drop noticeably by August
  • September can show dry rock on the eastern end

Local tip: Book at least a week ahead during July and August. Fly early in the morning for the calmest air and shortest wait times.

Victoria Falls during Low Water Season

Low Water Season

October to January

Water levels are at their lowest. The eastern section of the falls can dry up almost entirely, revealing the basalt rock face and the gorge structure below. This is not a worse time to fly. It is a different experience. You see geological features hidden by water the rest of the year.

Advantages

  • + Crystal-clear visibility of gorge and rock structure
  • + No mist interference for photography
  • + See features hidden by water in other months
  • + Better conditions for game viewing on extended flights

Considerations

  • Eastern cascades may have little or no water
  • Less dramatic than peak flood
  • Some visitors feel disappointed if expecting full falls
  • Heat and thermals in October can cause bumpy flights

Local tip: Manage expectations. If you want the full curtain of water, this is not the month. But the gorge views are genuinely spectacular in their own right. Tell your pilot you want to see the rock formations.

  • Generally shorter wait times

Afternoon (After 2pm)

  • Stronger contrasts and dramatic shadows
  • Golden hour light on late flights
  • Can be bumpier due to thermals
  • Sunset slots (if available) are very popular
