The Story Behind the Name
"Scenes so lovely must have been gazed upon by angels in their flight."David Livingstone, 1855
When Scottish explorer David Livingstone first saw Victoria Falls in November 1855, he wrote those words in his journal. Over 170 years later, the name stuck for the most popular helicopter flight at the falls. And he was not wrong about the view.
The Flight of Angels is a short scenic helicopter ride lasting 12 to 15 minutes (depending on the operator). The helicopter traces a figure-eight pattern directly over Victoria Falls, giving you an unobstructed view of the full 1,708-metre width of the falls, the spray cloud that can rise over 300 metres, and the beginning of the zigzag Batoka Gorge carved by the Zambezi River over millions of years.
You will fly over the falls multiple times, so passengers on both sides get clear photos. The pilot banks the helicopter gently to give each side an unobstructed look down. It is one of those experiences where the reality genuinely lives up to the hype.
What You Will See
The Full Falls
All five cascades of Victoria Falls seen from directly above. The aerial perspective is the only way to appreciate the full width in a single view.
Batoka Gorge
The dramatic zigzag gorge below the falls, carved over two million years. The basalt walls drop 120 metres to the churning Zambezi below.
Zambezi River
The wide, calm Zambezi above the falls, dotted with islands and hippo pools. A stark contrast to the chaos at the lip.
The Spray Cloud
During high water (Feb–May), the spray column rises hundreds of metres. Visible from 50km away, it creates a microclimate of constant rain at the falls.
Victoria Falls Bridge
The historic 1905 bridge connecting Zimbabwe and Zambia, spanning the gorge 128 metres above the river. A famous bungee jumping spot.
Rainforest Canopy
The lush rainforest on the Zimbabwe side, sustained entirely by the spray from the falls. A unique microhabitat in an otherwise dry savannah.

Photography Tips
Wear dark clothes. Light-coloured clothing reflects in the helicopter windows and ruins your shots.
Use a fast shutter speed (1/1000 or higher) to counteract vibration. Bump up ISO if needed.
Shoot through the glass, not around it. Pressing your lens against the window reduces reflections and vibration.
Morning flights give softer, warmer light. Afternoon flights are contrastier but can create harsh shadows.
Do not use a polarising filter. It creates rainbow patterns in the helicopter glass.
Take video too. The continuous motion and changing angles make for incredible footage.
What to Expect at the Helipad
Pickup & Transfer
Most operators collect you from your hotel or lodge 25 to 30 minutes before your scheduled flight time. The transfer to the helipad takes 5 to 15 minutes depending on location.
Check-In & Weighing
You will check in, sign a waiver, and be weighed. Passenger weight is needed for aircraft balance. Most operators have a 120–125kg limit per seat. Be honest about your weight.
Safety Briefing
A short briefing covers seatbelts, emergency procedures, and what not to do (no leaning out, no throwing anything). It takes about 5 minutes.
Board & Fly
You walk to the helicopter, buckle in, put on your headset, and you are off. The pilot communicates via the headset and points out landmarks.
Land & Photos
After landing, professional photographers will offer photos and video packages for purchase. These are optional. Your own photos are free.
